May is Foot Health Month and a perfect time to give your feet the attention they deserve. One of the most important factors influencing foot health is the type of footwear you choose. Wearing the right footwear is not just about comfort, it plays an important role in preventing injuries, improving your mobility and supporting your feet through all activities.
In our office, our Chiropodists frequently incorporate proper footwear recommendations into treatment plans. Understanding your foot type is the first step toward making better choices for long-term foot health.
The Basics of Foot Types
Not all feet are created equal, your foot structure is influenced by genetics, biomechanics and daily activities. Generally, feet fall into three main categories:
Flat Feet, Pes Planus, Low Arches
The arch collapses or is very minimal, causing most of the foot to make contact with the ground.
Neutral
A balanced arch that distributes weight evenly across the foot.
High Arches, Pes Cavus
An elevated arch that places more pressure on the heel and forefoot.
Each foot type affects how you walk and how your feet absorb shock, which is why footwear needs can vary from person to person.
How to Identify Your Foot Type
The best way to check your foot type is through a full assessment by a Chiropodist. During your visit they will evaluate your foot structure, gait, overall biomechanics and provide recommendations to keep your feet healthy.
For a quick at-home check, look at the wear pattern on the bottom of your shoes:
Wear along the inner edge and/or outer heel might suggest flatter feet.
Even wear along the whole shoe may indicate a neutral foot.
Wear along the outer edge might suggest higher arches.
While helpful, this test is not definitive, professional evaluation remains the gold standard.
Footwear Features That Matter
No matter your foot type, certain shoe features are essential when picking out shoes:
Arch support
Helps to distribute pressure evenly.
Cushioning
Absorbs shock and reduced impact.
Stability
Prevents excessive motion.
Heel Support
Keeps the foot properly aligned.
Toe Box Space
Allows toes to move freely without crowding.
Proper Fit
Ensures comfort and reduces friction or pressure points.
Choosing the Right Footwear for Your Foot Type
Flat Feet
Choose motion control or stability shoes, look for firm midsoles and structured arch support. Avoid overly flexible shoes.
Neutral
Opt for shoes with moderate cushioning and support, most neutral shoes will work well but proper fit is essential.
High Arches
Prioritizing cushioning to absorb shock, look for flexible soles that encourage natural movement and avoid overly rigid footwear.
Footwear Tips for Everyday Life
Good footwear choices go beyond athletic shoes, here are some tips for different occasions:
Match your shoes to your activity, running shoes, work shoes and casual footwear all serve different purposes.
Replace your shoes regularly as worn out shoes lose support and cushioning.
Prioritize function over fashion, supportive shoes can still be stylish.
Feet tend to swell as the day goes on, shop later in the day to ensure the best fit.
Step into Better Foot Health
Consider booking a foot assessment to better understand your individual needs. Small changes, like choosing the right footwear, can make a big difference in your comfort and mobility.
Healthy feet are the foundation of a healthy life. This Foot Health Month, give them the care they deserve.
